From the ashes rises a Phoenix…or at the very least a couple of birds with tremendous style.
A shamelessly festive show celebrating all that is Christmassy. From Michael Bublé and Tiny Tim to Frozen mashups and the return of the small and ever-popular Eskimo.
Mad-capped, joyous and at times preposterous, this is an evening of festive frivolity with a tiny sparkle of magic that will delight the unhinged and charm the pants of everyone else.
Charlie Bicknell became a household name playing ‘Delilah’ in BBC2’s This Life and subsequently starred as ‘Scout’ in Ben Elton’s West End hit Popcorn. Continuing to work as an actress for the National Theatre and rep around the UK, Charlie then moved into cabaret and circus, performing all over the world.
Louise Innes is a versatile operatic mezzo-soprano, who has sung at Covent Garden Opera House, Scottish Opera, La Scala, Festival Hall, and 10 Downing Street to name but a few. She has recently been performing with Charlie in London’s Crazy Coq, Chelsea Arts Club, St James Theatre and all over the South-West.

Introducing the Wessex Military Band
The band originally started as a youth band in 1981 and in 1990 the British Army invited the band to form as the voluntary band of the Army Air Corps based at Middle Wallop near Andover, as they didn’t have a regimental band. They became known as the Voluntary Band of the Army Air Corps but in 1993 the Army decided to disband the volunteer band, being undeterred at this time the Wessex Military Band was formed.
The Ministry of Defence repaid its gratitude to the band by providing financial assistance in reforming as the Wessex Military Band and allowing the band to use the recently decommissioned ‘Wessex’ regiment emblem with its distinctive Wyvern. One of the early and most prestigious engagements the band was involved in the early performing for HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Duke of Kent.
When, in 2006 it’s bandmaster and founder retired to Austria, the band was fortunate to have in its ranks people who had been and willing to take over the day to day running of the band.
After an extremely successful Winter Concert last year, it has been decided to continue with another one this year at the Electric Palace. Although the music has not yet been finalised, the Bandmaster is planning to try to improve on last years performance, with something for all musical tastes young and old. It is envisaged that the programme will include many topical and entertaining numbers, with some Christmassy numbers added in for good measure.
The Wessex Military Band has a strong base of members of all ages and abilities, ranging from beginners to ex-military musicians and music professionals. If you would like to join them and can play a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument or are interested in joining the Corps of Drums, please contact or leave a message for Mandy Bell on 07535 354433. or email enquiries.wessex@gmail.com
Mandy will get back to you as soon as possible.

In the summer of 2014 – the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings – octogenarian Bernie Jordan made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world – Bernie seemed to embody the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing.
But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was the story we all tell ourselves to make war and old age bearable. The bitter-sweet script explores the reality with wit and a very big heart. Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene – the story celebrates their love without sentimentality and with an eye to the lessons we can all learn from the Greatest Generation.

Ballygar, Dublin, Ireland, 1968: close friends Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) win the trip of a lifetime – a pilgrimage to Lourdes. With each woman desperately in need of a personal miracle, the trip seems like an answer to all their prayers.
But when they are joined by Chrissie (Laura Linney), returning to Dublin after decades in America, deep wounds from the past are re-opened and bitter truths exposed.
As they confront one another and embrace their shared past, the group reckon with revelations that will change them forever.
Directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, The Miracle Club is a heartfelt story of friendship, family, and forgiveness.

The heartfelt wail of the blues; the sultry heat of the campfire; the crazy swirl of the bal musette, all fused together with virtuosity and passion in the melting pot of 1930’s Paris: the result was gypsy jazz.
Now ‘La Vie en Rose’ play this exuberant, toe-tapping music with a swing and joie-de-vivre as fresh today as when Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli first conjured it from the back streets of Pigalle.
With two guitarists, violin, clarinet and double bass, the band consists of five musicians with wide-ranging individual backgrounds in classical music, traditional jazz, rock, blues, country, ragtime and roots, pulled together by the shared pleasure of gypsy jazz and hot swing.

At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder.

*THIS SCREENING IS SUBTITLED*

The Blues Band are now retiring from touring – but their two lead vocalists are continuing with their Acoustic Duo concerts.
Ruggedly durable and timeless, the Blues is perhaps more popular today than it has ever been. Young musicians still cut their teeth on its enticing, 12-bar appeal, but its real rewards, true virtuosity, poise and knowledge, only come with age.
Founder members of The Blues Band, Paul Jones and Dave Kelly’s tangled and colourful roots go way back into the true undergrowth of the tradition. As well as their own original material, they not only know and perform the work of the greats, ranging from Howling’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker through to Sonny Boy Williamson – they actually played alongside them, and enjoyed their friendship. After over a quarter century as presenter of his BBC Radio 2 R&B show, as a thrilling singer and harmonica maestro, what Paul Jones doesn’t know about the Blues can be written on a pinhead. The same can be said about Europe’s leading bluesman, Dave Kelly. He’s played with them all, including legends such as James Burton and Buddy Guy. Superb blues vocals combined with guitar virtuosity have elevated Dave Kelly into the higher echelon of international blues performers, where he truly belongs.
A live acoustic set by this dynamic duo is an occasion you’ll remember. If you’re a true Blues fan, everything you need is here.

Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) plays Gareth Southgate in James Graham’s (Sherwood) gripping examination of nation and game.
The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game?
With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt, to take team and country back to the promised land.
Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Rupert Goold (Judy) directs this spectacular new play.

Hungry for Change
We import nearly 50% of all our food in the UK, and waste one-third of it – so it is unsurprising that the food we eat and the way we produce it is responsible for a huge part of our carbon emissions.
Cornwall Climate Care’s Hungry for Change, looks at our reliance on this intensive, hyper-globalised, fossil fuel-driven food system – which is itself becoming more and more vulnerable to climate shocks.
The film is presented by forager Josh Quick, who asks whether there are ways of producing more of our food locally and in more imaginative, but less damaging, ways. It takes a fascinating and inspiring look at a whole range of stories, from the gleaners picking ‘waste’ crops in our fields to projects growing food in unusual places and a microbiologist keen to get us all eating low-carbon insects.
Food for Thought
Should we all be giving up meat and dairy if we’re to have a hope of avoiding dangerous climate breakdown?
This is what the headlines seem to tell us. But is this too simplistic a picture – and what would this mean for Cornwall, where the majority of our farmland is used to raise livestock or to grow crops for these animals to eat?
Food for Thought looks at the undeniable impacts of modern animal agriculture as well as some of the incredible Cornish initiatives underway to mitigate them – and also the role that regenerative farming could play in actually combating climate change while producing nutritious food.
Presented by organic beef farmer Lisa Guy, this film aims to inspire much-needed conversation and action about a crucial subject that has become one of the most contentious within the climate debate.

A hard-living, disillusioned, ex-social worker becomes the unlikely guiding hand to an anarchic joy-riding, drug-taking, thieving, out-of-control, care home kid and his gang of runaway friends. Adapted from Bernard Hare’s acclaimed and eye-opening memoir, Urban Grimshaw and The Shed Crew, I AM URBAN is as gritty, shocking, funny and heart-breaking as the real-life characters who inspired it.
Eleven-year-old Urban Grimshaw doesn’t go to school, he doesn’t read, write, or follow rules. His mother is addicted to heroin and no one knows where, or even who, his father is. He’s always in trouble with the police, but neither they nor the local kids’ home can keep him down. He’s earned the title of Britain’s most runaway child, with an appearance on Crimewatch as proof.
Urban may not have parents to rely on, but he does have The Shed Crew. A gang of disaffected kids aged between ten and fourteen; no strangers to drink, drugs and sex, the crew spend their days sitting around a campfire smoking weed, drinking, or stealing and setting fire to cars. This is all they have; no future, no choices, and no one seems to care…
Chop, a straight-talking, disillusioned ex-social worker who, like many living on the margins of society, has lost hope of a better future and relies on cheap beer, drugs and acerbic humour to get through the days. Another no-hoper, worn down and worn out by the constraints of a failed system. To add to his troubles, a drunken, opportunistic night with Urban’s mother, Greta, proves to be far from the light relief Chop was hoping for, and, somehow, despite his better judgement, he finds himself dragged into Urban’s life too.
Sometimes you can’t just sit back and watch anymore; sometimes, like it or not, no matter the consequences, you have to do what you can to help. The question is who is helping who?

Witness the rags-to-riches transformation of our beloved heroine played by Jess Goldstone as she escapes the clutches of her wicked stepmother, Lady Gargoyle (Amy Carlile) and stepsisters Beyoncé and Britney (Holly Gibbs and Justine Gawen). With the help of her Fairy Godmother (Hatti Amos) and her loyal friend Buttons (Amy Day) she is sure to prove that true love conquers all. King Hubert (James Oldfield) and Queen Harriet (played by newcomer Lauren Good) are determined to find a bride for their son, not realising that magic is at work. Laughter and excitement will be palpable as Cinderella eventually finds her Prince Charming (Johanna Leins) ably assisted by his servant, Gently, (Alice Scadding), but not without a few twists and hilarious moments along the way; especially when it comes to a certain love machine created by Professor Von Klaptrapp played by Ross Hughes.
Our talented, energetic cast and ensemble will transport you to a world of magic, love, and dreams that do come true. Not forgetting the accomplished dancing from ‘The Lyric School of Dancing’ pupils to add vigour and joy to the show. With the whole production’s engaging performances, vibrant costumes, and sensational dance routines, they will leave you wanting more. Be prepared to sing along, cheer for your favourite characters and become part of the action as the magic unfolds before your eyes.
This is a truly special experience for the whole family. Young and old will be delighted by the whimsical humour, heartwarming moments, and heartbreak. Our production is designed to entertain both the young and the young at heart, ensuring that everyone leaves with a smile on their face and a skip in their step.

Carmen (New Production)
Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell brings a vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works, reinvigorating the classic story with a staging that moves the action to the modern day and finds at the heart of the drama issues that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence, abusive labour structures, and the desire to break through societal boundaries.
Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a powerhouse quartet of stars in the complex and volatile title role, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo.
Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s heart-pounding score.

Bridport Arts Centre
The exquisite explorations of the liminal space that exists between traditional and classical music is what makes the music of Peter Knight and John Spiers so compelling and beguiling, ultimately rendering genres irrelevant.
The duo has developed into one of the most thrilling exponents of traditional tunes and songs, repurposing the material as jumping-off points into the most enchanting exploration
It’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to develop what has become an extraordinary partnership, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album, Both in a Tune. Released in 2022, it was chosen as one of the ‘10 Best New Albums from Around the World’ by the influential music journal, SONGLINES.
While Peter Knight, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today, John Spiers as co-founder of the almighty Bellowhead has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades.
The pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage, and the beautiful, mysterious tunes that can be found within that heritage.
These uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time.

This adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel embodies Kenneth MacMillan at his best, his acute insight into human psychology and his mastery of narrative choreography finding full expression in the impassioned duets of the central couple, visceral and urgent in their desire.
The heroine’s struggle to escape poverty make Manon one of the most dramatic and devastating of ballets, emphasized by Nicholas Georgiadis’ evocative designs that reflect the juxtaposition between Manon’s impoverished origins and the lavish world she longs to
inhabit.

In Aid of Weldmar Hospicecare
This fun afternoon is being organised to support a trek in the mountains & forests of Madagascar in November 2024, to raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare, our local hospice in Dorchester. Weldmar offer dedicated end of life care to patients & families across Dorset, which is free of charge & dependent upon the generous fundraising efforts of the local community – did you know they need to raise £18,000 a day to offer their skilled care & services.
To mark Weldmar Hospicecare’s 30th anniversary in 2024, they are planning two Overseas Challenges – one in Madagascar, the other to Machu Picchu. Those taking part need to train to prepare themselves for these treks, & fundraise – so what better way to help them raise money than to bring the family to watch Madagascar 3!
Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still trying to get back to the Big Apple and their beloved Central Park zoo, but first they need to find the penguins. When they travel to Monte Carlo, they attract the attention of Animal Control after gate-crashing a party and are joined by the penguins, King Julian and Co., and the monkeys. How do a lion, a zebra, a hippo, a giraffe, four penguins, two monkeys, and three lemurs travel through Europe without attracting attention and get back to New York? They join a travelling circus!

Not many acts stay together for a quarter of a century and still remain firing on all cylinders. But the Dub Pistols juggernaut rolls on, exploring fresh sonic pastures and accelerating into their 25th anniversary, their Silver Jubilee — like there’s no tomorrow.
The Dubs may have had an easier ride of it if they’d been a cartoon band like Gorillaz. There wouldn’t have been assorted band member casualties along the way, for starters, as life on the road took its toll. The multi-cultural collective has involved dozens of artists and musicians over the years — some remaining for years, a few for the duration, and others just popping in for a guest appearance. Their sound has accordingly morphed a variety of times since their inception: taking in dub, punk, jungle, ska, breakbeat, hip-hop and a whole lot more, it’s been a long road travelled.

Exhausted by the towering waves of the furious ocean, a shipwrecked mariner washes ashore on a deserted tropical island. There, a serene heaven on earth awaits him; the isle’s sandy beaches, timid animal inhabitants, and a gracefully swaying bamboo forest are only some of its unseen wonders. That’s all very well, but the tranquil haven isn’t home. As the days turn into weeks, the marooned sailor contemplates escape, jaded by the islet’s sun-kissed euphoria. Now, he only needs a small raft to flee the Eden-like prison. But as the seasoned seaman embarks on a perilous quest for liberty in the open sea, an indistinguishable adversary prevents him from leaving. And each day, the determined man tries to beat the odds. However, his increasingly sturdier and improved vessels are no match for the vast sea and its magnificent creatures. Who is the mysterious, heartless enemy thwarting the weary castaway’s noble plans?

Part one of Count Arthur Strong’s farewell tour. (Of the World. Potentially. (Certainly Jersey).
Having consulted with top Harley Street specialists, the St Anne’s Jombulance Brigade and Professor Twitty, that did covid, (the bald one), Count Arthur Strong has decided to gradually phase in his farewell tour over a, yet to be specified number of parts, because of the likelihood of people doing ‘Cold Turkey’ in theatres over him. Whilst partial, himself to the odd bit of cold turkey, it is banned in most theatre auditoriums, apart from in the north east, because of it getting trodden in to the carpets etc, and the cumulative smell. The management would appreciate your co-operation in this matter.
Join Arthur for this never to be forgotten start to his farewell tour in…

Based on the sell-out show at the Royal Academy of Arts, London
Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from the Royal Academy of Art, London.
From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract color, decorative design and utopian ideas. Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring facination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing colour, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the worlds greatest artists. As Monet said, ‘Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything’. For lovers of art or lovers of gardens, this is an ideal film.

Biographical Drama starring Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons.
As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history.
Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as “human computers”, we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history’s greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Gobels Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

This award-winning, multi-sell-out, international-touring performer returns from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a delightful hour comprising the best bits from his previous acclaimed comedy-with-cooking shows, plus a few new surprises.
Over the past half-decade George has toured three shows (Anarchist Cook’, ‘DIY Chef’ and ‘Movable Feast’), he’s cooked over a thousand dishes, all of them in front of a live audience and none of them with a kitchen. Revisiting those unlikely environments armed with the chef’s skills he’s honed, expect to learn how to make food on a train with a laptop, in a shed with power tools and in a hotel room with the appliances they unwittingly provide you with.
Three plates of gourmet food prepared in the most unconventional of ways and with the opportunity to taste the results at the end.

Back in the Day by Yasmeen Kahn Presented by BACstage Youth Theatre
A group of classmates are charged with the responsibility of being their school’s well-being champions. In a freak occurrence they are transported back to the 80’s via an impromptu and heavily improvised roller disco. Here they discover they’re not the only ones with skeletons in the cupboard, and there was more to the 80s than glitterballs and strange haircuts.
Shout by Alexis Zegerman
In a world full of words, how can Dana survive when she can’t speak? Dana has selective mutism, but that doesn’t stop her vivid imagination. Shout is a funny, moving play about anxiety, celebrating difference, and finding your voice. A play that wonders what exactly it takes to overcome anxiety and mental health issues when you’re a teenager. It’s not just the noise you make, that makes you who you are.

When the young geisha, Cio–Cio–San, marries American Naval Officer Pinkerton, she believes she is entering a real, binding marriage for life. Forsaking her religion and community, she learns all too late that for Pinkerton, their marriage is merely an illusion –
with tragic consequences.
With a score that includes Butterfly’s aria, ‘Un bel dì, vedremo’ (‘One fine day’) and the Humming Chorus, Giacomo Puccini’s opera is entrancing and ultimately heart–breaking. Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s exquisite production takes inspiration from 19th–century
European images of Japan. Asmik Grigorian performs the role of Cio–Cio–San, with Kevin John Edusei conducting.

Danses Concertantes, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955, was MacMillan’s first major work. An early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow, the work’s critical success spurred MacMillan to abandon performing in favour of choreography. It is followed
by Different Drummer, MacMillan’s complex and haunting balletic interpretation of Woyzeck, Georg Büchner’s play about a soldier’s descent into madness. The mixed programme concludes with Requiem, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet, created in memory of its lateartistic director, MacMillan’s friend and former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer John Cranko.
