Raft Race

23jul6:00 PMRaft Raceat West Bay

Event Details

Start and finish at Ire Pool on the River Brit (by the sluice gates), with competing teams and their homemade rafts arriving from 5.00pm.

Come and watch home-made rafts race (and sink!!) down the River Brit.

The idea is to avoid sinking, capsizing, falling in, etc.

Participants are dressed up in comedy or other well known guises.

The Raft Race began at West Bay in the 1960s by Ernie Hicks and was held at the end of August. The course was on the River Brit, starting from the Melplash Showground and finishing at Ire Pool by the sluice gates.

During the 1990s the event’s date was moved to the last Thursday in July with both start and finish at Ire Pool, the boats making a ‘U’ turn up the river.

Music & Dancing on dry land from The Skalatans.
