“UK punk erupted in 1976 like a cultural thunderbolt, driven by economic despair and a fierce rejection of the rock establishment. The Sex Pistols lit the fuse, while the Clash broadened punk’s horizons with reggae, politics, and social conscience. Bands like the Damned, Buzzcocks, and Siouxsie and the Banshees added their own voices to a scene that was short-lived but seismic, reshaping British music, fashion, and attitude for decades to come.” – Adrian Boot
This exhibition of Adrian Boot’s photographs will explore the raw, unfiltered spirit of punk rock through a series of powerful images that capture the scene’s energy, attitude, and urgency. The work focuses on punk in the UK and USA as both a visual and a cultural movement, highlighting its fast, confrontational nature and its uncompromising rejection of established social and cultural norms.
Adrian Boot
Few photographers have documented the soundtrack of our times quite like Adrian Boot. Now based in Bridport, his journey began unexpectedly in 1970 when a teaching post in Jamaica (teaching Physics, of all subjects) drew him into the heart of the island’s vibrant musical world, a connection he has never let go.
Returning to Britain, he forged a prolific freelance career behind the lens, his work appearing in the pages of NME, Melody Maker, The Times, The Guardian, and The Face. He was the chief photographer at some of the twentieth century’s most defining moments: Live Aid, Nelson Mandela’s Freedom at 70 Concert, and Roger Waters’ The Wall – Live in Berlin.
Equally at home in the archive and on the road, Adrian has authored several photography books and taken his exhibitions to audiences across the world – from the Punk exhibition and Songs of Freedom to Bob Marley: The Ultimate Experience, a Jimi Hendrix retrospective, and Reggae Xplosion. He also worked on the production of the Elvis Presley photo archive and permanent display at Graceland, Memphis.
His most recent projects reflect an enduring relevance: a contribution to the Beyond the Baseline exhibition at the British Library, and an ongoing role in The Music is Black: A British Story, a major exhibition opening at V&A East in 2026. Adrian is co-founder of urbanimage.tv.
