The Choral Tradition

Since Covid, singing in choirs has become a very popular activity, feeding on a huge repertoire of music created over a number of centuries.

In the 18th century, Protestant encouragement of congregational singing helped a burgeoning of music outside a sacred context, and today we enjoy a rich selection of music in the concert hall, stretching back to Handel and others, and including great composers like Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Britten enroute.

This course aims to explore that repertoire whilst putting it into an historical context.

Music, the heart of the matter.

Music is both a universal language and a culture specific art-form which elicits responses that are both common and personal.

This course will consider how music is processed in our brains and how we react to it through our own minds.

It is aimed at the music-lover rather than the psychologist.

Course presenter: Ian Lowes
