Let It Be A Tale

Last April we held an event in the Chapel in the Garden – ‘Candles in the Dark’ – to honour the stories and voices of children from Gaza. On the anniversary of that event, we are hosting a second evening, to hold those children and their families in our hearts, as the war in Gaza continues to destroy lives. We thought that by now we would be in a time of reconnection, reconstruction and recovery. But we are not, yet.

Last year’s event was called “Candles in the Dark”, from a poem by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. This year, it is named after a line from the poem “If I must die” by Refaat Alareer , which he shared shortly before his assassination in December 2023.

During this event, we will be retelling some of the stories from “Candles in the Dark”, and adding some stories from other young Gazan writers. Let it be a tale to keep the people of Palestine in our hearts and minds during these devastating times. We warmly welcome all to join us.
