23jan7:00 PMHOPTalks: Glaciers, Mountains, Buddhist Monasteries & Frozen RiversAn illustrated talk by James Crowden

Event Details

An illustrated talk by James Crowden about Ladakh, the Himalayas and changes in the environment since 1976, Global warming and all that. James spent a winter in Zangskar back in 1976/77 and has visited Ladakh many times since then and has noticed many extraordinary changes. Glaciers hold the key to survival at high altitude.

James was in the army once upon a time, was held up by communist Kurdish bandits at 13,000 ft on Mount Ararat before crossing the Desert of Emptiness in Eastern Iran. In 1974 he undertook a long walk in the Hindu Kush before setting sail for Ladakh. He also studied Civil engineering at Bristol and Ethnology at Oxford.  He worked in Dorset and Somerset for twenty years as a shepherd, sheep shearer, back woodsman and cider maker.

**  Occasionally he writes books and a bit of poetry  **

A selection of James’s books including those about Dorset and his most recent publication will be on offer. The Frozen River, Dorset Women, Dorset Coast, Dorset Footsteps and Lewesdon Hill.
