Funny, charming and surprising, this is one of the great Roald Dahl adaptations and one of the best animated family films of all time.

Told via gorgeous stop motion animation, Anderson and Noah Baumbach’s screenplay conjures up 87 minutes of wit, invention and delight, delivered by a top-drawer voice cast of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and even Jarvis Cocker. Voice recordings were, in a break from traditional animation practice, done outside of a recording studio: in a field, or a forest, or stable, and even, for some sequences, underground.

An autumnal aesthetic infuses the film: there’s no frame without the colour orange. The result is delicate, joyous, childlike and sophisticated.

Try getting your kids not to eat like Mr. Fox once they’ve seen this film. Chris Chibnall
