Join us for an early morning of birds, birdsong and breakfast at Coppet Hill, as our resident bird ringer Luke takes you out onto the farm to discover some of the birds that call Coppet Hill home.
We’ll meet at 7am at Purcombe Barn before heading out to the bird ringing sites with Luke. He’ll explain how bird ringing works and how it is used to monitor bird populations, movements and migration, giving us a fascinating insight into the lives of both our resident and visiting birds.
Depending on what’s around on the morning, we’ll have the chance to see birds up close and learn more about identifying different species — from farmland favourites such as Yellowhammer and Cirl Bunting to migrants including Reed Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap.
Luke will demonstrate the bird ringing process and explain how the information collected contributes to wider scientific research, helping us understand where birds travel, how long they live and how populations are changing.
After our morning in the fields, we’ll head back to the Barn Owl Buildings for a well-earned breakfast, with bacon croissants, tea, coffee and juice. There’ll be plenty of time to chat, compare notes and discuss the birds we’ve seen.
What to expect:
- Early morning birdwatching and birdsong
- Live bird ringing demonstration, subject to seasonal conditions and bird activity
- Learn about local and migratory birds and their journeys
- Explore some of Coppet Hill’s farmland and wildlife habitats
- Bacon croissant breakfast with tea, coffee and juice
Please note: Bird ringing is dependent on weather conditions and bird activity on the day, so we cannot guarantee that birds will be caught or ringed. The event will involve walking across farmland, sometimes over uneven or muddy ground, so please wear suitable footwear and warm, weatherproof clothing.
