Event Details
Exhibition of Banners at Bridport Arts Centre from 11am 29 June 2024, the woman who performed in A Common Woman Reimagined will be singing the songs at the opening, they will also be singing in Bucky Doo Square on Saturday 13 July at 1pm.
The production of A Common Woman Reimagined performed at the Lyric Theatre, Bridport in April told the story of the Greenham Common protest in the 1980s and its impact on a local family. As part of the storytelling director Margie Barbour commissioned three banners which were made by talented textile artist Maud Kilczynski, forming part of the stage set created by set designer Holly Miller. The largest of these banners was a copy of an original hung on the fences at Greenham Common Peace Camp in the 1980’s. The other two are Maud K’s own designs based on historical imagery used at the Camp, and also reflecting recognisable landmarks such as Bridport’s Town Hall Clock.
These wonderful banners will now be on exhibition in the foyer of the Bridport Arts Centre who, along with the Bridport Youth and Community Centre and the Lyric Theatre, supported the production.
The opening of the exhibition will be on Saturday 29 June at 11.00 am and the women who played Greenham Women in the production are coming to sing the songs that were part of the play. Jane Silver Corren, who led the singers at the Lyric is pleased to return to support them, offering another opportunity to show the importance of the protest songs to the women at the peace camps.
The production was sold out for each of the performances, so this is a chance to hear some of the wonderful harmonies that were a central part of the play. Information about the banners and the production will be on display for three weeks.
The production was financially supported by Bridport Town Council and Dorset Community and Culture fund, as well as by many people in Bridport who gave generously to their Crowd funder.
