About Us
Steeped in history and naval tradition, Cornish Pilot Gig Racing is a rapidly growing sport that has swept the south coast of England and beyond.
Historically Cornish Pilot Gigs would race out to win the business from visiting tall ships and pilot them into harbour; they were also used as lifeboats with hardy gig crews often being the only assistance available to stricken shipping.
Situated at West Bay on the stunning Jurassic Coast; Bridport Gig Club Ltd (BGC) was founded in 2007 by a group of like-minded individuals with a passion for rowing, community and fitness. After a number of months of fund raising and local promotion the now 50 strong members were ready to launch.
Time has moved on since then and Bridport Gig Rowing Club is now a well-established community project. We have approaching 150 members, 1 fibreglass training gig “Bucky Doo” and two wooden racing gigs “Dagger” and “Blaez”. All are stored in our Boat house situated on Fisherman’s Green in West Bay harbour.
We row all year round, with our busiest period being the summer and racing season. During the summer we run 20 plus rowing sessions each week, weather permitting. This is all managed through our website, online booking system and with our dedicated rowing captains.
We are proud of the fact that every boat we launch is crewed by one of our 10 strong highly trained cox team. They are there to keep you safe, guide your row and develop your rowing skill as well as to push you just that little bit harder!
