The Marching Band (En fanfare) is a warm and quietly stirring French drama directed by Emmanuel Courcol.

The story follows Thibaut, a celebrated orchestral conductor whose life is built on precision, discipline, and the rarefied world of classical music. When a sudden health crisis leads to a shocking discovery, he learns that he was adopted and has a brother he never knew existed.

That brother, Jimmy, could not be more different. He works in a factory in northern France and plays trombone in a small-town brass band. Where Thibaut moves in concert halls and international circles, Jimmy’s world is rooted in community fêtes, working men’s clubs, and the proud, defiant heartbeat of local music-making.

As Thibaut seeks a bone marrow donor, the two men are brought reluctantly into each other’s orbit. What begins as an awkward reunion slowly becomes something deeper, as music becomes the bridge between them. Through rehearsals, rivalry, humour, and moments of fragile honesty, they begin to explore what brotherhood means when shared blood has not meant a shared life.

At its heart, The Marching Band is about class, identity, and belonging. It celebrates the democratic power of music, whether performed beneath gilded ceilings or in a draughty town hall. With warmth and a touch of wry French humour, it reminds us that harmony is not only something written on a stave, but something forged between people.

A quietly rousing tale where brass instruments carry not just melody, but memory.
