Following extensive repair and restoration, Bridport Town Hall is now fully open and welcoming visitors.
The restoration project saved the building from what could have been devastating structural failings. The building was in a far worse condition than anyone anticipated and a large amount of underpinning, and new structural supports had to be inserted into the building. Despite numerous unexpected problems the project was completed on budget and the building reopened to the public in March 2012.
As well as the historic restoration of the building, the project level enabled access into the building from Bucky Doo Square and included the installation of a lift. New lighting, heating, and ventilation systems were installed, to make the building more comfortable for users and to protect the historic interior, with its newly restored Newbery paintings and murals. On the first floor, a new kitchen, toilets, secondary glazing and IT facilities were also been incorporated.
The project was not been simply about saving an historic building but creating a ‘living’ building that welcomes everybody and embodies the vibrancy and character of the town. The project was achieved thanks to the support of Bridport Town Council, West Dorset District Council, Dorset County Council and primarily the Heritage Lottery Fund.
