Soon after his introduction to the Viardot family Gabriel Fauré fell in love with their youngest daughter, Marianne. Fauré started work on his first piano quartet shortly after she agreed to marry him but, to his great dismay, she broke off the engagement after only four months.
The quartet was finished a year later. Franz Schubert owned two guitars made by Johann Georg Stauffer, Vienna’s finest luthier. His Arpeggione Sonata takes its name from a kind of bowed guitar invented by Stauffer. In this transcription with cello. the guitar takes the piano part preserving the lightness of Schubert’s original version.
Peter Hope’s A Dorset Calendar is a short string quartet inspired by the seasonal changes of a west-country garden.
Ukrainian born Russian-British composer, Vladislav Shoot, studied and lived in Moscow before settling in Dartington in 1992. Magic Flight, is his arrangement of an excerpt from the music for the film Mad Love.
