Bridport FC Fund Raising Evening  with 3 Course Meal in The Bull Hotel Ballroom

with guest John Still football regaling us with tales from his many years in the football industry.

John Still is a bit of a legend in the world of English football, especially when it comes to non-league clubs

Born in 1950 in West Ham, London, he’s spent decades managing teams and has earned a reputation as a manager who knows how to get the best out of his players, even when the resources are tight.

John kicked off his managerial career in the late 1970s after hanging up his boots as a player. His first big gig was with Leytonstone & Ilford, where he started to show his knack for leading teams to success in the lower leagues.

Non-League Specialist John really made a name for himself in non-league football, where he’s known for turning underdog teams into real contenders. One of his early successes was with Maidstone United in the 1980s, where he guided them into the Football League for the first time ever.

But his most famous stint was with Dagenham & Redbridge. John took them all the way to the Football League by winning the Conference (now National League) in 2007, and he even led them to League One in 2010—a huge achievement for a club of their size.

Dipping into the Football League John didn’t just stick to non-league football; he also had success in the Football League. His time with Luton Town stands out. He took over when the club was struggling in the Conference in 2013 and got them back into the Football League in his first full season. He’s remembered fondly by Luton fans for helping to turn the club around.

Even in his later years, John stayed active in the game, managing Barnet and returning to Maidstone United in different capacities. He finally decided to step away from full-time management in 2018 but stayed involved in the game through scouting and consultancy roles.

John Still is admired for his ability to build teams that punch above their weight. He has a sharp eye for talent, often spotting players who go on to have solid careers in the Football League. What sets him apart is his loyalty and the way he sticks with clubs, often for several years—a rare quality in football management today. All in all, John Still’s career is a testament to hard work, dedication, and a deep love for the game, especially at the grassroots level.
