The Girl Who Helped Bring Liverpool Punk Scene to the World
Join us for a special evening celebrating punk with former Melody Maker journalist and author Penny Kiley, followed by a punk quiz with prizes.
Penny will be interviewed by Graham Jones about her acclaimed new memoir, Atypical Girl, followed by an audience Q&A. Penny will also be signing copies of the book during the evening.
It is 1977 and punk rock has just exploded into Liverpool. The legendary Eric’s Club becomes home to the city’s rebels, dreamers, misfits and future stars. For Penny Kiley, it is the beginning of a journey that will lead her into music journalism and a front-row seat to some of the most exciting moments in British music.
Atypical Girl traces Penny’s relationship with music from the turbulent political landscape of the 1980s through to the changing culture of the 21st century. Throughout it all, she remains an outsider, searching for identity and purpose while unknowingly navigating life as an autistic woman.
Part coming-of-age story and part midlife reinvention, Atypical Girl is a moving and often humorous exploration of belonging, self-discovery and the power of music to shape our lives.
Featuring encounters with:
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Paul McCartney, The Cramps, Jonathan Richman, Tracey Thorn and many more.
Following the interview and Q&A, put your punk knowledge to the test in our Punk Quiz, with prizes up for grabs.
We’ll also be holding a charity auction of signed vinyl, together with a selection of fantastic records that attendees can take home in return for a donation. All proceeds will support War Child and Nordoff Robbins.
