Ancient Peruvian burial grounds have yielded dazzling goldwork, fine ceramic vessels, and some of the richest textiles in the world.
Chosen women devoted their lives to weaving for the Sun and the Inca State, and their profusion of sumptuously embroidered designs illustrates that for the Incas, ruling the Andes after AD 1200, textile arts were the supreme media.
Today, nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquest, textiles remain central to Andean life.
Speaker: Chloe Sayer
Chloë Sayer is a freelance specialist in the art and culture of Latin America. She has curated many collections and carried out fieldwork in Mexico and Belize for the British Museum; she is also a Research Associate with the Department for World Cultures in Toronto, curating and writing the accompanying book for their 2015-16 exhibition.A prolific writer on the subject, Chloë has lectured worldwide for galleries, museums and cultural institutions.
