LOOKING FOR AGNES

A talk by Karen Hunt to CELEBRATE a Bridport pioneer in the fight for women’s rights and COMMEMORATE Bridport’s first woman Town Councillor on the centenary of her elect

Who was Agnes?

In 1921 Agnes Suttill (1865-1928) became one of the country’s first woman councillors when she was elected to Bridport’s council. This was rare and a significant achievement for her and for the town.

Yet this pioneering woman is not commemorated in Bridport. Why don’t we know her name or her achievements? Why did she campaign for women’s rights? What motivated her step into the public world? How did she become Bridport’s first woman councillor? What difference did she make? Why have we forgotten her?

To find out more about Agnes and how we might celebrate her contribution to Bridport, come along to this centennial commemoration in the hall she gave to the town.

Wednesday 24 November, 2-4pm in WI Hall – with a celebratory cup of tea and cake

The room will be ventilated, they ask people to wear masks before they take their seats.

All other appropriate Covid precautions will be taken.

Alternately you can watch the talk from your home via Zoom. Purchase a virtual ticket and then you will be emailed the link.
