Fra Newbery is best known as the head master and director of Glasgow School of Art where during a period of some 32 years, from 1885 to 1918, he raised what was a moderately successful British institution into one with an international reputation. During the 1890’s, Newbery had nurtured a group of highly innovative designers. The group, one of whose members was Charles Rennie Mackintosh, developed the progressive Glasgow style.

Fra Newbery grew up and found his vocation as an artist in Bridport and Dorset, he also spent the long fruitful years of his retirement in the county.

Newbery redesigned Bridport Town Hall’s council chamber between 1924 and 1927 and his paintings and murals can still be seen today.
