In 1872 Gabriel Fauré was introduced to the brilliant soprano Pauline Viardot and soon became, not only a regular at her renowned and highly influential salons but also a close family friend. His first violin sonata was dedicated to Viardot’s violinist son, Paul, who enjoyed great success with his appearances in London and Paris. In this concert it is paired with Paul Viardot’s dramatic and tuneful second violin sonata.
