Hugo VickersMalice in Wonderland – My Adventures with Cecil Beaton

Hugo Vicker’s life took a dramatic turn in 1997 when the legendary Sir Cecil Beaton invited him to be his authorised biographer.  The excitement of working with the famous photographer was dashed days later when Beaton died.  Vickers was entrusted with Beaton’s papers, diaries and access to friends and contemporaries.  Vickers has edited the witty and perceptive diaries which reveal the photographer’s many fascinating encounters and his observations of cultural figures of the time as well as members of the Royal Family.

In conversation with Boris Starling

Cecil Beaton’s diaries are extraordinary, funny and often acerbic observations of many of the legends of his circle including The Queen Mother, Lady Diana Cooper, Truman Capote, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.  He was undoubtedly the the Photographer of the day for almost half a century covering the period of WWII and the awakening of a new world in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies.

Hugo Vickers is a writer, lecturer and broadcaster and an acknowledged expert in the British Royal Family. He has written biographies of The Queen Mother, Princess Andrew of Greece (the late Prince Philip’s mother) and his most recent bestsellers include The Quest for Queen Mary and The Sphinx – the life of Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough.

Boris Starling is an award winning author and screenwriter whose books have appeared regularly in the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller lists.  He lives in Dorset with his family and other animals.
