James McAvoy (X-Men, Atonement) returns to the stage in an inventive new adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, broadcast live to cinemas from the West End in London.

Fierce with a pen and notorious in combat, Cyrano almost has it all – if only he could win the heart of his true love Roxane.

There’s just one big problem: he has a nose as huge as his heart.

Will a society engulfed by narcissism get the better of Cyrano – or can his mastery of language set Roxane’s world alight?

Edmond Rostand’s masterwork is adapted by Martin Crimp, with direction by Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal).

This classic play will be brought to life with linguistic ingenuity to celebrate Cyrano’s powerful and resonant resistance against overwhelming odds.

“Plant Hunters & Pioneers”

 This talk will give us a brief history of a remarkable nursery which sent 23 plant collectors to many countries, mainly during the Victorian period.  It highlights some of the well-known and interesting varieties introduced by the pioneering plant hunters who discovered many hundreds of new species. So successful were they that there is scarcely a garden in the British Isles that does not contain a plant derived from their introductions.

Geoff Norcott’s unique brand of provocative stand-up is hitting the road again in the Spring, continuing with the success of his critically acclaimed show, ‘Taking Liberties’.

Whatever the contentious subject – he’ll be honest and blunt without being a dick. Mostly.

Geoff has also appeared frequently on Question Time and can be regularly seen putting the cat amongst the pigeons on UK political debate shows.

You may have also heard him on his own Radio 4 comedy special or popping up on The Now Show.

He’s written for shows ranging from Have I Got News For You and C4’s Alternative Election to Judge Romesh, Roast Battle and JFL’s Katherine Ryan Stand up show.

Geoff won an operational medal for his five tours performing to British troops in Afghanistan.

The Cellist / Dances at a Gathering

Cathy Marston has previously been an Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House and Director of Bern Ballett, and is much in demand internationally.

The inspiration for her first work for The Royal Ballet Main Stage is the momentous life and career of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré.

Jerome Robbins’s elegant and elegiac classic forms the second part of the programme. This exercise in pure dance for five couples, set to music by Chopin, is a masterpiece of subtlety and invention.

This event was originally planned to feature a premiere of new work by by Liam Scarlett. This has been postponed to a future season.

ARTISTS HAVE ALWAYS USED JOKES TO MAKE SERIOUS STATEMENTS – ABOUT THEMSELVES, ABOUT THE WORLD, ABOUT THE NATURE OF ART.

This lecture looks at artists’ jokes through the ages, from medieval monks doodling graffiti in the margins of manuscripts to Banksy turning supermarket walls into social satire.

Caravaggio put his own face on Goliath’s severed head as an apology for a racy lifestyle, Michelangelo hid a self-portrait on the hide of St Bartholomew on the Sistine ceiling to express the agony of creation. When Van Gogh attacked formal art education and Salvador Dali got at Picasso, they did it in paint. Trompe l’oeil, parody, visual puns, the moustache on the Mona Lisa – all in fun, all deadly serious: artists’ jokes tell you a lot once you know where to look.

UK and British Blues Award winners Catfish have so far played in six European countries, won the UK Blues Award for Blues act of the Year (England) to add to their 2016 British Blues Award, written and released their third album, all original material, and met some amazing people on the way round the UK and Europe.

During 2019, they have already toured Europe and will be back there later in the year for a number of festivals including Switzerland, France and the Czech Republic.

They have two more European tours coming up in September and November.

With their now legendary passionate live performances, this has become one of the must-see bands on the blues rock circuit.

Their previous album Broken Man was voted album of the year by the IBBA and was nominated for a UK Blues Award in 2018.

In May 2019, they released their highly anticipated third full album Burning Bridges which has been receiving excellent reviews like these from UK and European music press.
