Artworks reflecting the ageing process as well as the erosive effect of the illness on the individual. The method of developing the image is slow, the intensity of each piece mirrors the nature of the relationship between mother and daughter. These large scale, emotive and detailed pieces will be on display alongside some new work from the series Absurd Sewn Selfies.

The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable, illustrating how uncontrollable emotions can range across gender, country, class and age.
Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters with a colossal sweep that takes audiences from the stifling atmosphere of the Sicilian court to the unbuttoned joy of a Bohemian festival.
Staged at the beautiful and iconic Globe Theatre in London, this new production is directed by Blanche McIntyre and stars Will Keen (The Crown, Wolf Hall) as Leontes, Priyanga Burford(W1A, Marcella) as Hermione and Annette Badland(EastEnders, Father Brown) as Old Shepherd.
A reconstruction of an open-air Elizabethan playhouse on the bank of the River Thames, the Globe Theatre has become a significant part of the national and international theatre landscape, celebrating Shakespeare’s transformative impact on the world.
Continuing its popular Globe On Screen series, The Winter’s Tale will be filmed live on Thursday 4 October 2018 and played at the Electric Palace on Thursday 25 October 2018.

The new exhibition at Sladers Yard brings together three artists whose work responds to tidal water in very different but complementary ways, each one thrilling and utterly original.
Anthony Garratt is an experimental painter of landscape. His paintings of Dartmoor
and the Devon coast in this exhibition show his love of running and tidal water within
the landscape. Since he and his young family moved to Dartmoor, Anthony’s
engagement with this wild landscape and the visible traces of its long history speaks in
these dynamic paintings.
Often working outdoors, he is at the mercy of the elements which are liable to wash
away his paint and radically change his painting, however this is part of the story of the
work for him. As Mary Myers put it in Country Life, ‘Anthony Garratt has taken en plein
air painting to a new extreme. Happiest when the weather is wild, he regards the
unpredictable effects of the elements as central to his work.’ Increasingly he is
exploring the human, both political and emotional, within the landscapes he paints,
alongside the nature of the paint itself. In Dartmoor, as on Snowdon, there is much
evidence of abandoned human efforts and these draw Garratt’s fascination. He is
interested in landscapes that emphasise the vulnerability of man. ‘Perhaps I regard
adversity as a form of beauty. There is beauty in the knowledge that humans are not
all-powerful and in control of the planet. We are at the mercy of it. If my paintings are
able to communicate that beauty, perhaps that is what I am striving for.’
David West’s extraordinary talents both as a wood carver and as a painter seem to
have realised a visionary peacefulness and contemplative quality in his recent work.
Gilded carvings of the moon and of moonlight on the sea were the first signs of his
bringing the mystery and wonder he discovered on the Kumano Kodo pilgrim trail in
Japan in 2008 back to his own surroundings here in Dorset. A fascination with light on
the surface of water in all its many manifestations has followed. His most recent work
explores the shoreline, rock pools and tidal waters of the Dorset coast where the tide
comes in over flat layers of weathered rock. Some gilded, some painted, these almost
abstract rhythmic reliefs are unique and exceptional works of art.
Petter Southall has been making his distinctive furniture at his studio outside Bridport
since 1991. He makes his designs by hand using an innovative combination of boatbuilding
and fine cabinet-making techniques. He started working wood as a teenager
building traditional boats in his native Norway. That knowledge and love of
streamlined curved forms has stayed with him throughout his furniture-making career.
A highly original and confident designer in wood, Petter’s work is stunning to look at
and very pleasing to use. At Sladers Yard we keep a rotating exhibition of samples of
his work, some of which is for sale and some available to commission to your own
specifications.

Performed by a chorus of varied actors (European, African, LGBTQ, Mature etc) the diversity and inclusiveness of this show absurdly challenges stereotypes, discrimination and censorship. Focusing on the meaning of Art and how it can bring people and communities together. Exploring Art as a language that is understood on a universal level. Can they come to a sense of unity?

The Golden Age of Travel – A Talk by Paul Atterbury Presented by the Golden Cap Association (West Dorset) The 1920’s and 1930’s were very much The Golden Age of Travel with Cunard, the Orient Express, Pullman trains and flying boats. Paul will embark on an alluring journey into this golden age of great ocean liners and luxury rail travel. Paul famously presented a television programme on the BBC whilst travelling on board a train headed by the iconic steam locomotive ‘The Flying Scotsman’ .
Despite never having an ambition to appear on television, Paul in his ‘trademark’ striped blazers has been on the ‘Antiques Roadshow’ team for over 25 years.
Paul, now based in Weymouth, used to live in Eype and has published books of old postcards showing Eype and West Bay. His books on travel include Country Railways, Branch Line Britain, and Exploring Britain’s Canals.
Non-members welcome. Admission £3. Includes tea or coffee and biscuits.
