Bridport Electric Palace
Introducing the Wessex Military Band
The band originally started as a youth band in 1981 and in 1990 the British Army invited the band to form as the voluntary band of the Army Air Corps based at Middle Wallop near Andover, as they didn’t have a regimental band. They became known as the Voluntary Band of the Army Air Corps but in 1993 the Army decided to disband the volunteer band, being undeterred at this time the Wessex Military Band was formed.
The Ministry of Defence repaid its gratitude to the band by providing financial assistance in reforming as the Wessex Military Band and allowing the band to use the recently decommissioned ‘Wessex’ regiment emblem with its distinctive Wyvern. One of the early and most prestigious engagements the band was involved in the early performing for HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Duke of Kent.
When, in 2006 it’s bandmaster and founder retired to Austria, the band was fortunate to have in its ranks people who had been and willing to take over the day to day running of the band.
After an extremely successful Winter Concert last year, it has been decided to continue with another one this year at the Electric Palace. Although the music has not yet been finalised, the Bandmaster is planning to try to improve on last years performance, with something for all musical tastes young and old. It is envisaged that the programme will include many topical and entertaining numbers, with some Christmassy numbers added in for good measure.
The Wessex Military Band has a strong base of members of all ages and abilities, ranging from beginners to ex-military musicians and music professionals. If you would like to join them and can play a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument or are interested in joining the Corps of Drums, please contact or leave a message for Mandy Bell on 07535 354433. or email enquiries.wessex@gmail.com
Mandy will get back to you as soon as possible.

From 6th November ‘St Ives colony of artists’, Monday afternoons in Bridport 2pm or Friday afternoons from 10th November, 2pm on line:
The course starts by explaining the history of why artists were attracted to St Ives to paint, Turner for example travelled to west Cornwall to make watercolour sketches and drawings. The quality of the light in West Cornwall remains a factor that draws painters to the area. There was an increase in the number of artists in the later 19c onward, who came to Cornwall when the railway extends to Penzance. St Ives becomes a place artists feel free to experiment in their work, and there is support in the community to do so, from other painters. This leads to a hot bed of modernity in the late 1920’s onwards, with a new visual language developing amidst the painters and sculptors, which is a British version of Modernism; but quite often holds on to very recognisable figurative elements and uses form and colour boldly, responding to the landscape and seascape around the artists. Some of the artists discussed, will be Terry Frost, Bryan Pearce, Rose Hilton, Roger Hilton, Paul Feiler, Wilhelmina Barns- Graham, Peter Lanyon, Karl Weschke, Sven Berlin and the new movement of ceramics of Cornwall and other artists. So exciting was the art of St Ives that it attracted famous artists to visit the colony and some stayed and joined it!

In the summer of 2014 – the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings – octogenarian Bernie Jordan made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world – Bernie seemed to embody the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing.
But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was the story we all tell ourselves to make war and old age bearable. The bitter-sweet script explores the reality with wit and a very big heart. Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene – the story celebrates their love without sentimentality and with an eye to the lessons we can all learn from the Greatest Generation.

Ballygar, Dublin, Ireland, 1968: close friends Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) win the trip of a lifetime – a pilgrimage to Lourdes. With each woman desperately in need of a personal miracle, the trip seems like an answer to all their prayers.
But when they are joined by Chrissie (Laura Linney), returning to Dublin after decades in America, deep wounds from the past are re-opened and bitter truths exposed.
As they confront one another and embrace their shared past, the group reckon with revelations that will change them forever.
Directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, The Miracle Club is a heartfelt story of friendship, family, and forgiveness.

The heartfelt wail of the blues; the sultry heat of the campfire; the crazy swirl of the bal musette, all fused together with virtuosity and passion in the melting pot of 1930’s Paris: the result was gypsy jazz.
Now ‘La Vie en Rose’ play this exuberant, toe-tapping music with a swing and joie-de-vivre as fresh today as when Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli first conjured it from the back streets of Pigalle.
With two guitarists, violin, clarinet and double bass, the band consists of five musicians with wide-ranging individual backgrounds in classical music, traditional jazz, rock, blues, country, ragtime and roots, pulled together by the shared pleasure of gypsy jazz and hot swing.

Barney Kenny is quickly carving out a name for himself as a solo artist across the folk circuits. Armed with a 6 string and a Lapsteel slide guitar, Barney Kenny’s music doesn’t fall into the normal trappings of ‘folk’. Heavily influenced by world music, blues and rock, Barney blends storytelling and acoustic music with his foot-stomping somewhat delta style. He has racked up several thousand views on the Narrowboat Sessions platform and also over social media.

Laugh Out Proud at Bridport Arts Centre will feature the stand-up-comedy delights of Mark Cram, Kate Martin and Daniel Foxx!
This is night is all about giving acts and audiences alike a fun and friendly place to express themselves, kick back, have a laugh and good time in an inclusive and welcoming comedy club environment. Whether it’s comedy, cabaret or anything in between – Laugh Out Proud is the queer night out you’re looking for.
Mark Cram is quite the all-rounder; with both a killer set and strong MCing chops. For the last few years Mark has been plying his comedy trade across the UK. Constantly evolving, usually unpredictable; he is garnering positive reactions everywhere he goes. – “A Masterclass in comedy design” Newbury Weekly News
Kate Martin is ‘brilliantly funny & energetic’ (Angela Barnes) and her ‘confident delivery and slick material’ (Chortle) have quickly established her as one of the most exciting new acts on the circuit. At 6ft 1 and with the longest wingspan in comedy (*probably), Kate’s a naturally engaging, energetic performer with effortlessly tight gags to match. Her unique background in mental health has given her a fresh take on the world, a completely distinctive voice, and fuels her high energy storytelling, whip-smart punchlines and razor-sharp observations of life’s quirks through queer eyes. – ‘Undeniably gifted. Explosive new talent, definitely an act that you will be bragging about seeing early in her career.’ NDC
Daniel Foxx is an award-winning comedian and writer from London. His easy-going delivery and sharp jokes have quickly established him as one of the most exciting new acts on the UK comedy circuit, whilst his comedy sketch videos have earned him a huge online following and millions of views.

This practical masterclass will teach you all the artisan crafts needed to create authentic cured and smoked products such as bacon or hot smoked mackerel pate. These traditional, artisan methods that celebrate time as an ingredient will help you unlock the ancient knowledge that transforms fresh meat and fish into classic cured products and introduce techniques such as air drying that dismisses the notion of ‘use by and sell by’ as well as intensifying flavour.
Our expert tutor Steven Lamb will guide you through the techniques of dry curing, brining (wet curing), hot and cold smoking as well as fermentation. We’ll start with a brief chat on where curing and smoking sits in the pantheon of culinary arts and focus on the special ingredient of salt as the curing agent. We’ll move on to some basic butchery, to discover where the best curing and smoking products can be found and then focus on applying the various methods mentioned above. As time forms an integral part of the curing and smoking process there will be examples of pre-made products for tasting which will also act as a guide in terms of how products change throughout the process.
Curing and smoking techniques are the beginning of cookery and anyone attending this workshop will be tapping into the culturally significant ancient knowledge that allowed our ancestors to utilise fire and eventually preserve gluts of food for times when there was little to eat. These methods open the citadel to all those sweet, savoury smoky and spicy flavours that elevate flavours to a whole new level. Typically, we will make bacon or pancetta, chorizo and salami as well as hot smoked pork tenderloin and mackerel pate. From the cold smoker we will create a range of smoked cheese or butter as well as salmon or trout.
This is the perfect workshop to fine tune existing skills or develop new ones whether you want to make single products or create platters and mezzes of outstanding charcuterie.
Program For The Day:
9.30am – Arrival with coffee, tea and homemade bacon taster
10.00am – Course starts
The day starts with a brief introduction to the art of curing & smoking and where it fits culturally in the culinary world. Next there will be a session of butchery, breaking down a side of pork which will help to recognise where the best cuts are made to create perfect joints for curing and smoking. Everybody will make their own bacon from pork belly in this session before breaking for lunch
1.30pm – Lunch
2.15pm – Afternoon session begins
In the afternoon session we will mince pork shoulder to create cooking chorizo and salami. Then we will cover brining with an opportunity to use game such as pheasant or pigeon breast and discover the benefit in using a wet cure. We will then move onto hot and cold smoking to round the day off with a hot smoked pork tenderloin or mackerel pate and a cold smoked fish.
4.30pm – Course finishes
Skills covered:
After a day attending our Curing and Smoking Workshop you will have the skills and confidence to do basic butchery as well as applying the methods of dry curing, wet curing hot and cold smoking as well as fermentation to make an array of classic, authentic products. You will also have first-hand knowledge of what the best equipment and sundries to use and where to source it. Each attendee will leave with a booklet of methods and recipes to help support their onward learning journey.
Typical products made:
Bacon / Pancetta
Salami
Cooking Chorizo
Hot smoked fish and pork tenderloin
Cold smoked salmon or trout, cheese and butter

By 2050 it is estimated that world production of food will need to increase by 70% to feed a population of 9.1 billion. New kinds of pesticide have been developed which are suitable for organic farming, but which have not yet been adopted by multinational agrochemical companies. The time has come for change.
Insect pests, ranging from malarial mosquitoes to invading Asian hornets and numerous agricultural pests are currently controlled by toxic pesticides. It is a staggering fact that over 40% of all food and fibre produced in the world is lost to field and storage pests. The pesticide market for rice in India alone is estimated at $2.5 billion per annum, the losses of grain in storage in the US amounted to over $2 billion in 2010.
Pollinators, on the other hand, contribute an estimated $217 billion to the costs of global food production and need to be protected from the effects of agrochemicals.
Philip Howse was awarded the OBE for his research at Southampton University on ‘green’ methods of pest control. Philip Colfox, owner of the Symondsbury Estate, is one of a group of farmers in West Dorset seriously concerned about the damage to the environment and human health caused by synthetic pesticides. Join us in finding out what can be done. |
The HOP talks are part of an initiative aiming to inspire and inform individuals, families and local communities with tangible actions to help combat the effects of climate change and environmental degradation, and to raise money for charities working in these areas. Each month the charity is chosen by the speaker. The project was initiated by Philip Howse OBE (Professor Emeritus, University of Southampton) with Professor Sir Ghillean Prance FRS VMH (former Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) and the late James Lovelock CBE.

Bridport Electric Palace
At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder.
Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal.
Also starring Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, based on David Grann’s best-selling book.
