Mumblecrust Theatre’s superb and magical family show, The Tale Of The Cockatrice, is now touring the UK after outstanding success at Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe.
Deep in the vaults of an ancient priory a hideous creature awakens. A deadly cockatrice is born! Bold knights flee in terror! Can a humble nun defeat the beast? The play is based on a little-known legend from British Folklore – an ancient tale of an evil creature, set in the historic village of Wherwell. We hear of the village’s struggles, the lives lost and the heroes slain. Can a humble nun find the answer and defeat the beast?
Artistic Directors Anthony Burbridge and Katie Underhay wanted to create something to entertain all ages, but also to fill a niche in family theatre, where slightly older children sometimes get left out. The Tale of the Cockatrice is sophisticated and scary, atmospheric and meaningful – a family-friendly horror full of monsters, historic queens, slapstick humour and clever wordplay.
The Somerset-based company scooped two awards in Brighton – Best Newcomer To Brighton Fringe [awarded by Voice Magazine] and Best of Brighton Fringe Children and Family Show [awarded by the International Youth Arts Festival]. As well as award wins, the production has gained glowing reviews at Brighton and Edinburgh including 5-stars from The Voice and ‘Highly Recommended’ from Fringe Review.
For ages 6+
Join the award-winning puppetry team behind The Tale of the Cockatrice in a two-hour workshop exploring puppetry and object theatre. This workshop will explore the principals of puppetry and how to bring a puppet to life using every day objects as well as puppets from the show!
Anthony and Katie will lead a series of exercises and games, teaching techniques in puppetry and object manipulation, culminating in a short performance at the end of the session. No previous experience necessary! Open to all ages (5+) and abilities.
