This exhibition is part of our exciting 3.5 year collections review project. ‘The Right Stuff’ seeks to find out from our local community what you think we should keep collecting now, and also in the future. We aim to be bold: what should we keep, and why?

We only display about 5% of our collections in the Museum. We have around 20,000 objects in our stores- many of which are of national and international significance like our rope and net and fossil collections.

The exhibition introduces you to some of the challenges that we face in caring for its collections- with lots of opportunities for everyone to have their say!

Julian Bailey- Hold that Pose

17th July – 12th September 2021

Julian prints his black and white drypoint etchings on a hand press and colours some of them by hand in gouache.

Julian has brought out a new book illustrating his prints to coincide with the exhibition called Hold the Pose. Having made his name over the last thirty years or so painting   the Dorset coast in thickly textured clear bright oil paint with expressive brushstrokes, he has recently been figure drawing from a model in the studio and engraving the metal etching plates with lines that he prints in inky black with no room for mistakes. His great sense of colour shows in the simple gouache washes he hand-paints onto some of the prints.

Julian is showing in Sladers Yard’s first Summer Prints and Drawings Show bringing together seven acclaimed artists who all take time out from painting to make fully resolved ambitious prints and drawings. The exhibition includes prints by Sally McLaren, Martyn Brewster and Michael Fairclough and drawings by Alex Lowery, Vanessa Gardiner and Janette Kerr.

Sladers Yard’s first Summer Prints and Drawings Show brings together seven of our most popular artists. Acclaimed painters in oil, acrylic or mixed media, they all take time out from painting to draw or make prints.

All is easy level walking, and cost £5 per adult. Under 16s are free.

American roots musician based in Bridport, Dave performs blues, bluegrass, rock n roll, old-time, folk, country, etc. He sings and plays guitar, keyboard, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and tap dances often whilst playing an instrument and singing.

Guided Walks

Join us at the Discovery Centre every Thursday at 10.30am as we take you on a guided walk around West Bay.

Different walks are available including:

Hidden West Bay Walk (0.5 miles, 1.5 hours, Grade: Very easy) – Discover West Bays hidden history with us.

West Cliff and Eype Walk (2.5 miles, 2 hours, Grade: Medium – good terrain but some steep gradients) – Discover the fascinating landscape between West Bay and Eype.

River and Railway Walk – (2 miles, 1.5 hours, Grade: Easy – one slope to the crest of the beach) Discover the history of the old West Bay railway and the beautiful flora and fauna along the River Brit.

Walks are £5 per person – cash or card accepted upon attendance.

Our ropemakers are going ‘rogue’ this Summer!

They will be making rope outside the Museum on Fridays between 10.30am-12pm.

Watch them twist their magic: you might even get a piece of rope to take away!

Please note: our rope makers will be observing social distancing, so we politely ask that you do the same and stay 2m away from each other.

The hottest day out in Dorset!

We are delighted to be back for our 10th anniversary on 31st July & 1st August 2021 at the new venue of Stock Gaylard. We’ll have another great weekend for chilli enthusiasts, food lovers and families at an exciting new venue. We’re lining up a glorious weekend of “chilli fiesta”, with stalls selling all things chilli, from pepper plants to cayenne condiments; seeds to ceramics; artisan food producers; music; chilli cook-off competition; chilli eating competitions; spicy street food; local ice creams to cool the mouth; local beers to slake the thirst.

Blimey ohRiley (AKA the mind altering sausages) are a band hailing from sleepy Devon. A collective of musicians who have gigged with the likes of Noel Gallagher, Frank Turner, & Megadeth to name but a few.
