For our first full Scratch & Spit night of 2020 we are thrilled to welcome performer Kat Lyons with her headline show Dry Season.
At 38, Kat thought she was still far too young to think about menopause; her body had other ideas…
Combining original spoken word poetry with excerpts from medical literature and drawing on interviews and fairytale imagery, Kat takes the audience on an autobiographical journey through a year of hormones, mental health issues and unexpected camaraderie. An intimate, funny, and tender spoken word theatre show, Dry Season uses one woman’s experience of premature ovarian failure to explore the process of coming to terms with a shifting identity, and question the way that aging- particularly the role of aging women – is viewed in society.
Dry Season was choreographed by dance artist Laura Dannequin, with later dramaturgical development by writer Amy Mason.
Kat Lyons is a Bristol–based writer, poet, storyteller and performer, with a background in live art and troublemaking. She has told stories for adults and children, collaborated with an ecologist to create site–specific explorations of the intersections of myth, folklore and environmental science. As a queer feminist performer, Kat’s creativity is critically engaged with the wider political landscape. She views spoken word performance in all its forms as the original DIY entertainment, and believes it has the power to engage all ages and demographics in creatively interpreting their experiences.
Scratch & Spit takes place at The Lyric on the last Monday of every other month, with the first half featuring around six 5-minute scratch slots (sign up on the night), then two more developed 10-minute scratch slots (to be pre-booked), then a headline show in the second half after the interval.
