Event Details

Bridport Arts Centre

The Bristol Griot band combines the melodies of master kora player Moussa Kouyate with the spoken word by trumpeter David Mowat, exploring the twenty years of Bristol-based life of emigre Moussa. The band also features concert harpist Emmy Broughton and virtuoso bassist Federico Leonori; the irrepressible Jimi Can contributes guitar and vocals, and Senegalese percussionist Suntou Susso adds rhythmic flair on the djembe.

Moussa Kouyate is from a thousand-year-old lineage of elite Griots (musician/poets) to the kings of Mali. He grew up in Senegal and became established in Dakar, making koras and playing them in his unique rhythmic style. Moussa’s big break came in 1999 when he played at the Edinburgh Festival and then Glastonbury and WOMAD. Following on from his ‘Kora Blues’ album, he has just released a new album called ‘Bristol Griot’ with his newly formed band.

David Mowat (trumpet/flugelhorn/spoken word) has had an eclectic career both as world music musician and community builder, an identity that was a reason why he formed this band with Moussa Kouyate who also sees his Griot role as creating community through music. David’s many projects include the Bollywood  Brass band and BEJE, the BristolEuropean Jazz Ensemble, which played at Bridport Arts Centre with oud player Knud Stuwe in 2018.

Combining music and storytelling, the six-piece Bristol Griot band colourfully celebrates Moussa Kouyate’s unique take on his tradition and his persona as Griot, relocated as a musician/community maker to Bristol’s people in streets, parks and the Harbourside.
