“If you don’t see my blackness, you don’t see me.” – Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg)

Amandla Stenberg delivers a magnetic performance as Starr, the bright 16-year-old switching with confidence between her Black neighbourhood and preppy, predominantly white high school – until a policeman shoots and kills her friend, Khalil. Russell Hornsby and Regina Hall excel as the parents attempting to shield their daughter from the dangers of racism while still preparing her for its grim realities.

George Tillman Jr. directs with style and verve, bringing the humour and tragedy of Angie Thomas’s powerful, best-selling YA novel to the screen in one of the most urgent movies of recent times. The film’s fast, smart dialogue, charismatic young cast, and sensitive handling of clashing perspectives keep the personal and political in play.

Dir. George Tillman Jr., USA 2018, 133 mins. With Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Issa Rae.

Certificate 12A
