Time: 2:30pm to 5pm

The first Special Event for the Friends in 2018
is devoted to Eric Ravilious: his Family and Friends based on three
recently published books. Firstly, Art Historian and Exhibition Curator,
Andy Friend’s fascinating biography of the circle of British interwar
artists and designers Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship
tells the collective story of Ravilious and his fellow artists including
Edward Bawden, Paul Nash, Enid Marx and Tirzah Garwood. Secondly,
Ravilious’s son, James Ravilious, a superlative photographer, whose
work is captured in a new book: The Recent Past – a volume of
exquisite photographs of rural Devon and lastly James Ravilious: A
Memoir written by his wife Robin Ravilious.
At 2.30 pm Andy Friend will give an intriguing illustrated talk about
Eric Ravilious who has come to be recognised as one of the most
influential British artists of the twentieth century. Painter, designer,
book illustrator, wood engraver and war artist – Ravilious ‘s sudden
death 75 years ago has triggered an intriguing narrative of creative
achievement and demonstrates the extent to which Ravilious and his
fellow artists were comparable in impact to the Bloomsbury Group.
There will be a Refreshment Break when Friends are invited to
meet Andy.
The second half of the afternoon will feature an illustrated talk by
Robin Ravilious about the photography of her late husband, James,
and his unique talent in capturing the fast vanishing traditional life of
rural Devon. Robin and Andy will then join together in conversation
with James Crowden about the importance and influence of father and son whose work continues to captivate and enthral.
