Event Details

Directed by and starring Everett, this poignant dramatisation of Wilde’s final years in exile is a powerful parable of passion and redemption.
Wilde’s tumultuous life has been well-covered in cinema before, but previous films have tended to shy away from the ignominy of his final years, the topic Everett tackles head on here.

Released from prison following his conviction for “gross indecency”, the result of his very public affair with Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas (Colin Morgan), the great man of letters is living in exile in Naples and Paris.

On his death bed, his eventful life comes flooding back via expertly interspersed flashbacks, featuring both his glory days and his downfall.

Bolstered by a kind of ironic detachment, he must nevertheless draw on his internal reserves to face his mortality and the wreckage of his public self with courage. Also stars Colin Firth, Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson & Anna Chancellor.
