Down the Slipway- An exhibition about Shipbuilding in West Bay

The harbout at West Bay no longer shows any visible signs of its shipbuilding past. However, during the period 1769-1879 over 350 ships were built here. We will be bringing the shipyard back to life and discovering some of its secrets in this anniversary year (Part of Turner events in Bridport #TurnerinBridport)

Wicked Wessex Tour: The Cat O’Nine Tails

20th July to October 5th 2019

At the Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum, Dorchester

Learn about the Dark History of Wicked Wessex. The cat-o’-nine-tails was a type of whip used in the Royal Navy. A sailor could be flogged for anything from drunkenness to desertion. Each of the cat’s ‘tails’ was knotted to increase the pain of the lashes.

Golden Cap Guided Walk

Saturday 21st September

Join Jurassic Coast Ambassador Geoff Rowland for an invigorating walk to the top of the highest point on  England’s south coast-Golden Cap in West Dorset.

This walk begins at Golden Cap Holiday Park at 10.30am, and will take you up and over Golden Cap itself, from where you can take spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast. The walk will also take in the ruins of St.Gabriel’s Church, and the “street beach” of St. Gabriels Mouth if access is available. Returning via the easier walking path North of Golden Cap, finishing at the Anchor Inn in Seatown for well-earned refreshment!

This walk will be between 2-3 hours round trip. Parking is available at the Anchor Inn car park, or take the Jurassic Coaster bus to Chideock.

The literary & Scientific Institute is a Grade II* Listed Building in the heart of Bridport. Built by Sir Henry Warburton in 1834 it has recently been the subject of a major refurbishment.

This historic building is now a modern vibrant location for business, education, training and the community.

Who are the Celts? What have the Romans ever done for us? And why is Emperor Nero dousing himself in horse wee?

Friends, Romans, Celts… Lend us your ears. The all-conquering Romans rule the civilised world – and that includes “the stain” that is Britain.

While the young Emperor Nero must battle his scheming mother Agrippina for ultimate power, Celt queen Boudicca gathers an army in Britain to repel the rotten Romans.

Mixed up in this battle for liberation are the teenage Atti, a reluctant Roman soldier, and Orla, a young Celt with dreams of becoming a warrior like Boudicca.

Will they fall on opposite sides or forge a friendship in the chaos of Celtic-inspired rebellion?

Electric Broom Cupboard Presents
THE CHESTERFIELDS

35 years since they formed in Yeovil, Somerset, The Chesterfields are back for a short run of UK dates.

The Chesterfields came to prominence in 1986 as part of a thriving UK underground scene that had turned its back on over-produced 1980s chart music and was looking for back to basics pop music.

Bands, independent record labels, gig promoters and fanzine editors were making their own entertainment, with The June Brides, The Wedding Present, Primal Scream and The Loftleading the way, supported by Radio One’s John Peel and Janice Long.

They released three albums, ‘Kettle’ (1987), ‘Westward Ho!’(1987) and ‘Crocodile Tears’ (1988) before splitting in 1989.

The group reformed to play New York Pop Fest in 2016, and now features Andy Strickland of The Loft and The Caretaker Race.

DAI-NICHI
Tokyo-based Dai-Nichi are Seiko Nemoto (bass and vocals) and Yuko Yamazaki (guitar and vocals).

Together they play a uniquely Japanese brand of art pop that nods sideways at English bands like Gang Of Four, XTC, Dr Feelgood and Buzzcocks.

DJ ALAN FLINT
Yeovil-based DJ Alan Flint has been DJ at Electric Broom Cupboard gigs since 1987.

Always thirsty for new original music, he’s very much the John Peel of the Yeovil music scene.

He is also known for his drumming and love of Echo and The Bunnymen.

Set in 1987, during the austere days of Thatcher’s Britain, ‘Blinded By The Light’ is a joyous, coming-of-age story about a teenager who learns to live life, understand his family and find his own voice through the words and music of Bruce Springsteen.

From writer/director/producer Gurinder Chadha (“Bend It Like Beckham”) comes an inspirational drama set to the music and lyrics of Bruce Springsteen’s timeless songs.

“Blinded by the Light” tells the story of Javed (Viveik Kalra) a British teen of Pakistani descent, growing up in the town of Luton, England, in 1987. Amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the times, he writes poetry as a means to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the inflexibility of his traditional father, but when a classmate introduces him to the music of “the Boss,” Javed sees parallels to his working-class life in Springsteen’s powerful lyrics. As Javed discovers a cathartic outlet for his own pent-up dreams, he also begins to find the courage to express himself in his own unique voice.

Based on Sarfraz Manzoor’s acclaimed memoir Greetings from Bury Park, “Blinded by the Light” is a joyful story of courage, love, hope, family and the unique ability of music to lift the human spirit.

Chadha directed and produced the film, which was written by Manzoor, Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges. The story is underscored by the music and poetic lyrics of Springsteen, who gave Chadha his blessing from the film’s inception.

Bridport Charter Fair is triumphantly returning this year with a day of entertainment, information and demonstration to reflect our wonderful community.

The Charter Fair celebrates the granting both of the first Market Charter by Henry III in 1253 and the reconfirmation of the right to hold a market by Elizabeth I in 1554. It also celebrates the Citizen’s Charter, which in 2018 confirmed Bridport as the U.K.’s first “Rights Respecting Town.” The former, with the market now listed as one of the top markets nationally, has helped shape the Town’s character over the centuries – the latter will be influential in determining the future identity of our community.

The Fair seeks to reflect this community – what it does, who does what – with a focus on a single day of music, information and demonstration based in the Arts Centre and Bucky Doo Square, followed by an evening showcase of diverse entertainment in the Arts Centre.

Red, Chuck, Bomb and the rest of their feathered friends are surprised when a green pig suggests that they put aside their differences and unite to fight a common threat. Aggressive birds from an island covered in ice are planning to use an elaborate weapon to destroy the fowl and swine way of life. After picking their best and brightest, the birds and pigs come up with a scheme to infiltrate the island, deactivate the device and return to their respective paradises intact.
