What would you save if the museum was on fire?
Bridport Museum’s volunteers have displayed some special objects around Bridport for you to discover.
Everyone has a special thing. A family heirloom, your first Teddy Bear or perhaps a piece of jewellery. Anyone can see what it is, but why would you save that, and only that particular item from a fire?
The Museum Volunteers were asked this same question, with the twist that they could only choose something from the collection!
You can find the first Love My Object displays at Bridport Library, Bridport Leisure Centre and in the Museum from Tuesday 5th April.
Why not get involved by scanning the QR code and telling the Museum about the special object you’d save from a fire?
Alternatively, share a picture on social media and tag them on Twitter @bridportmuseum or Instagram @bridport_museum, using the hashtags #LoveMyObject and #TheRightStuff
Love My Object is part of the Museum’s community project ‘The Right Stuff’, which asks some tricky questions – Why do we have certain things? Should we have them? If not, where should they go? Find out more about the project by visiting their website www.bridportmuseum.co.uk.

Saturday 9 July until Sunday 11 September 2022
Wednesday to Saturday 10am – 4.30pm
At Sladers Yard, West Bay Bridport DT6 4EL
World-class artists fill Sladers Yard Gallery in West Bay this summer. Highly acclaimed landscape artist Alex Lowery from Charmouth shows his unique and distinctive paintings of West Bay and Portland alongside the work of Akiko Hirai, a Japanese ceramic artist working in London who has taken the world by storm, and the exceptional furniture of Bridport’s own Petter Southall whose work in in many of the finest collections in this country and around the world.
Alex Lowery’s most recent paintings seem to express a feeling of release, of going to new places and looking with new eyes at familiar places. In his confident, thrilling paintings of West Bay and Portland, he has long been a master at transforming the local and everyday into something universal and heartstopping. Here Alex Lowery expands his range with paintings of new and diverse subject matter from London’s Barbican Centre to the Orkney Islands.
Born 1957 in London, Alex Lowery studied at Bath Academy, Sir John Cass School of Art and the Central School of Art in London. He has painted and shown regularly in Dorset and London since 1994. He exhibited for many years with Art First in London and has shown at the Estorick Collection and at Browse and Darby. His work is in many distinguished private collections as well as the Dorset County Hospital Art Collection, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St George’s Hospital Tooting and the Fidelity International Art Collection. He has shown at Sladers Yard since it opened in 2006. This is his sixth solo exhibition here. He lives in Charmouth with the artist Vanessa Gardiner. Shortlisted in 2019 for the prestigious International Loewe Craft Prize, Akiko Hirai is now one of the most popular potters in this country. Akiko Hirai was born in Japan in March 1970. She already had a degree in cognitive psychology before coming to England. Inspired to take up ceramics by the Korean moon jars in the British Museum, she studied ceramics at the University of Westminster and graduated from Central St. Martins. She now works in Stoke Newington, London. Her intensely handmade tableware has a remarkable purity. Deeply textured, glazed in soft white, matt black and natural colours, her forms are those of simple and satisfying workware. She chooses very rough dark clay and often glazes it with white, which forms a veil between the rough forms underneath and the smooth calmof the exterior. Her range is extensive and fine pieces of porcelain join intensely worked jagged edged Moon Jars and deeply glazed platters. She has shown at Sladers Yard almost every year since 2009.
Petter Southall is a dynamic designer in wood. He has been making his innovative stunning furniture designs with immaculate craftsmanship and detailing from his Dorset workshop since 1991. His work is in eminent private collections and in public and corporate collections all over the world. Recently he has enlarged his practice to include outdoor pavilions and buildings including the Wave Pavilion for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2019. Sladers Yard is his showroom, converted by him with sensitive beautiful detailing and filled with his work.
The sources for Petter’s designs are the shapes he steam-bends in solid hardwoods. Using this ancient boat building technique on exceptional, renewable Northern European timber, he makes shapes and forms that are practical, ecological and pleasurable for contemporary use. Aerodynamic lines spring naturally from his sense of curves and proportions. Natural finishes and textures with very little glue and no composites or MDF make healthy tactile furniture that will last and enhance life for generations.
Sladers Yard Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am – 4.30pm. Café Sladers is a fully licensed seafood restaurant on the ground floor and in the yard at Sladers Yard. The Café opens the same hours as the gallery but is also now open on Sundays with a special lunch menu. Lunch reservations are welcome.

Welcome…
to Tomorrow’s World.
The Children of the 70’s…saw life change radically. Now you can too.
From the creator of The Spirit of Woodstock… the next chapter… a highly dynamic & energetic collage of the stories, the time, the people, the music. A romp through the 70’s.
“Outstanding Show” …. masterly…such integrity…. both hilarious and chilling by turns. Brown’s extraordinary fluency & quick-change of voices, body language & peaked caps entertains first & foremost, informs last of all…. mesmerising… why (isn’t) this virtuoso writer, director & performer already a national icon?
There’s no greater writer/performer working in Brighton, or Sussex.” Fringe Review. May 2022
“We went back to the fabulous 70’s for a beautifully observed commentary on the events with a great mix of music. It was emotional & some of the events are still current! Thank you for a great evening” Carol Kennedy.

Brian lives alone in a remote village in the countryside.
Something of an outcast, he spends his spare time inventing things out of found objects in his garage.
Without friends or family to rely on, Brian decides to build a robot for company.
‘Charles’ is not only Brian’s most successful invention, but he appears to have a personality all of his own and quickly becomes Brian’s best friend, curing his loneliness and opening Brian’s eyes to a new way of living.
However, Charles creates more problems than Brian bargained for, and the timid inventor has to face-up to several issues in his life; his eccentric ways, a local bully, and the woman he’s always been fond of but never had the nerve to talk to.

The band formed in 2021 from a collection of like minded musicians who met through playing in several bands in the local music scene. Fronting the band Chris ‘Kipper’ Roberts is a singer/songwriter who has supported such acts as Damien Rice and Holy Moly & the Crackers. with a vast catalog of original material it was time to set the world on fire with a full line up. Jamie Parker, Rick Veall and Jack Ansell were recruited as the backbone of the band. Having performed in several bands together for the last 15 years, they provide a solid frame and tightness to Kipper’s songs and the Masau’u sound. Their unique brand of entertainment fuses powerful and thought provoking songwriting with a powerful tight sound including 3 part harmonies. Producing an energetic performance alongside Kipper’s witty stage banter. Masau’u will make you want to get up and dance.

Long before he becomes the master of evil, Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell) is just a 12-year-old boy in 1970s suburbia, plotting to take over the world from his basement.
It’s not going particularly well.
When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—this unexpected family joins forces. Together, they build their first lair, design their first weapons, and strive to execute their first missions.
When the infamous supervillain super group, the Vicious 6, oust their leader—legendary martial arts fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar® winner Alan Arkin)— Gru, their most devoted fanboy, interviews to become their newest member.
The Vicious 6 is not impressed by the diminutive, wannabe villain, but then Gru outsmarts (and enrages) them, and he suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil.
With Gru on the run, the Minions attempt to master the art of kung fu to help save him, and Gru discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN RETURN is an enchanting, moving and heart-warming adventure for a new generation.
1944 – As life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children – Lily (Beau Gadsdon), Pattie (Eden Hamilton) and Ted (Zac Cudby) Watts – are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth.
There to meet them on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role in the original film), her daughter, Annie (Sheridan Smith), and grandson Thomas (Austin Haynes), and with their help the evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside.
When the children discover injured American soldier Abe (KJ Aikens) hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home.

Slinky Machine is a four-piece instrumental jazz fusion band who are equally at home in a jazz bar as they are playing to a festival crowd, with a typical Slinky Machine set ranging from exciting original material, through jazz fusion classics, to classy re-workings of contemporary tunes.
Comprising drums, electric bass, electric guitar and keyboards including lots of Moog and Hammond, Slinky Machine has been described as:
“A superbly-exciting band fused by the coming together of musical maestros. Slinky Machine’s progressive jazz is just what it says on their tin; a slinky, sleek sound with riffs that cling to the memory and an almost-samba sinuousness that sways the body with the blissful warmth of a summer breeze.” – Geoff Baker, former publicist for Paul McCartney
“What can I say. Amazing music last night and you guys must be so proud. The set, the arrangements, the slinky funky gelling of the band was top class stuff. Thank you so much for honouring our venue with such amazing music.” – Andrew Knutt, Director, Creative Innovation Centre CIC
Bristol fusion trio King Heron was created from the union of three different and distinct musical personalities. With improvisation, groove and a modern jazz mentality, they meld disparate influences into their own take on the guitar trio sound

This is a unique opportunity to view these talented Artists together at one venue.
Both Dorset artists, Jenny Penney (Relief Sculpted Landscapes & Ink Drawings) & Di Pattinson (Felt & Textiles) are inspired by our natural world, especially Dorset.
Their works are unique in their own art forms and are made out of natural materials.
Jenny starts every piece of work with a detailed drawing in ink pens (some of which will be on view) before selecting the shapes and colours for the next stage. She produces her landscape pictures by cutting out card and layering it into what she calls “Relief Sculpted Landscapes”. The complex pictures are strikingly individual, contrasting from other artist’s interpretation of iconic Dorset views. Jenny is also selling printed products of her original images which transfer very successfully giving the viewer the false impression that the prints are also in relief!
Mugs, bags, coasters and cards also available. Email: jennyvp@outlook.com
Di creates 2D and 3D art work using various types of fleece and natural fibres.
Feltmaking is the oldest know method of making a fabric and it has always fascinated Di how a seemingly delicate fleece can be manipulated to create a tough durable fabric.
She works with undyed and dyed fleece and takes a painterly approach when creating her 2D pieces, laying down the background and blending colours to give a multiplicity of shades and tones. She then carries on with a process called wet felting. Di uses a needle felting technique to add finer details. The complex textures and detail give interest and intrigue. Her 3D pieces are more functional and again the design ideas come from natural forms. Each piece is entirely unique.
Some are wall hangings and others will decorate a lonely cupboard or tabletop.
