About Bridport Choral Society

The objective of BCS is to study and perform choral singing within the community of Bridport and outlying districts, and to help and encourage members to improve their abilities and skills in singing.

Bridport Choral Society was established around 1900 and at that time, boasted both a Choir and an Orchestra. It has gone through various fortunes since then, and is still firmly placed in the Arts and Culture of Bridport.

We have about 50 members, generally well balanced in all parts. and we are always delighted to welcome new singers. We have a policy of no auditions for those wishing to join, but we do ask for some musical knowledge (although music reading is not essential), enthusiasm and commitment to the Choir.  Contact us via Facebook or the website, or just turn up to one of our rehearsals.

We have two sessions a year, where we learn new music and build up to our two main concert performances.  During these sessions we meet on Mondays at 7.30 pm in the Bridport United Church Hall in East Street, with the autumn session commencing in early September and finishing with the Christmas Concert. The Spring session starts in early January and ends with the Spring Concert in May.

We also give other less formal performances throughout the year, such as singing for the residents of the Sydney Gale Residential Home in Bridport and for the Bridport Blind Club.

As there are a number of choirs dedicated solely to Classical music within the area, we offer a more varied repertoire, which is pleasurable both to audience and choir.  Our concerts cater for a range of tastes and our repertoire includes contemporary classics, traditional and popular songs, spirituals, and songs from the shows as well as Classical music. There is usually something to suit all tastes.

Since 2017 the choir has been directed by James Crawshaw. The accompanist is Peter Parshall.
